Environmental Issues
Resource Issues
Throughout South Asia, there are food and water shortages that make it difficult for people to survive. The region is home to the world's largest number of hungry people. Within South Asia, there are about 350 million people that do not get enough food and water. The region is facing the challenge of providing enough water for drinking and growing food because the population is increasing at a rapid pace. Another issue in South Asia is that rice and wheat, which are staple foods, require huge amounts of water and energy, and there is not enough available. Freshwater, which was once abundant, is now not as readily available due to the increased demand for competing uses. This water and also land is in demand for biofuel production. Although the biofuel production is a positive for the region, it leaves less land to grow food. Lastly, natural disasters, such as earthquakes and floods damage the arable land, making it difficult to grow food in South Asia. South Asia is a huge region with many people, so with the shortages of food and water, living the in region could be problematic for certain people.

Pollution
There is a significant pollution problem in South Asia. During the winter, the temperature drops and causes smog to hang in the air. This has become a major problem in Bangladesh, India, and Nepal. The smog is so thick that is causes issues with air traffic and mobility. It also blocks the sunlight. In the region, there are many people suffering from pulmonary and respiratory diseases. The World Health Organization estimates that about 2.4 million people die each year because of air population. Since there is such a large population as well as industrial work in South Asia, this is causing the pollution to worsen each year. |
Conservation
Throughout South Asia, there is land set aside to protect natural ecosystems, vegetation and wildlife. Specifically in India, Bangladesh, Afghanistan, and Pakistan, there are wildlife conservations supported by the Wildlife Conservation Society. These countries value their wildlife and provide a natural habitat.

Sustainable Development
In South Asia, one of the developments that is a main focus in poverty education. Throughout the entire region, there are people working to better the education systems and make education readily available to people. Another project that developed is the United Nations Millennium Declaration. Within the Declaration, there is a commitment to eradicate extreme poverty and hunger, achieve universal primary education, promote gender equality and empower women, reduce child mortality, improve maternal health, combat HIV/AIDS, malaria, and other diseases, ensure environmental sustainability, and develop a global partnership for development. The region independently plans to focus on ensuring livelihood security, combating environmental disasters, preventing industrial pollution, managing urbanization, and conserving biodiversity. South Asia is continuing to meet the needs of the present and planning for the future.
